Proximal development refers to the concept with a difference between a learner’s ability to perform a task independently versus under external influence. The main theory behind PROXIMAL DEVELOPMENT is “The distance between the actual development level as determined by independent problem solving, and the level of potential as determined through problem- solving under adult guidance or in collaboration with more capable peers”.
The zone of proximal development (ZPD) refers to the range of capabilities, skills, techniques, etc. that a person can perform with assistance, but cannot perform individually. These skills are called “proximal” because the person is close to mastering them but needs more guidance and practice to perform these actions autonomously. Thus, individuals learn through the socio-cultural environment, and in collaboration with skilled persons or platforms, they engage upon. - Tasks the learner can do Independently (without assistance). This is the level one of proximal development, this category includes everything that a person can do without taking help from more experienced personnel.
- Tasks the learner can do with assistance (requires guidance).This is level two of proximal development, this category includes tasks that a person can’t work through by themselves but can work through with the help of personnel or mentor.
- Tasks the learner can’t do even when assisted.The third level which is the final category includes tasks that are too difficult to perform even with an instructor’s help.
